On Vacation ...
So blogging will be slow, if I get around to it at all over the next week.

* So, Casey Blake is batting third. Never thought I'd see the day.
* I've never been less excited for a Browns season. I don't see how they'll be any good.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

I once paid hard-earned money to watch Casey Blake bat cleanup. Granted, it was after Travis Hafner took a Mark Buehrle fastball off the cheek a couple of year ago, but still...

I've come to this realization/acceptance about Blake: He's not a bad player. Heck, he isn't even really a bad hitter. His all-around game can be classified as "solid."

But there are few guys in baseball I would rather see at the plate with the game on the line less than Blake. If you have Blake at the plate with two outs, runners at second and third and trailing, Blake will strike out.

If your definition of a good hitter is a guy who can foul pitches off to keep at-bats alive until he finds something to drive, Blake isn't it. He simply doesn't possess the coordination to react that quickly. It's a big reason why he takes so many called third strikes. He just can't make the decision to swing fast enough if he has to think about it.

If your definition of a good ("solid") hitter is .267 with 25 HR and maybe 70 RBI, Blake can do that. As long as you don't mind the .170 with RISP, or the .060 with RISP and two out.
