Steelers set to hire Mike Tomlin?
That's the word. In some ways, the hiring is a surprise, if only because I figured the Steelers would stay in-house with their selection.
Russ Grimm was who I figured they'd go with.
But Tomlin is strikingly similar to Bill Cowher: A young defensive coach from outside the organization.
I'd comment on the hiring, but I understand my opinion on this matter is meaningless. Even as a Browns fan, I have come to realize you shouldn't question the judgement of the Rooneys.

You definitely don't question the Rooneys. That family is probably the best ownership group in professional sports.

Whether it's Mike Tomlin or Russ Grimm, we can be assured that he will be the Steelers coach for the next 15 years minimum and will lead the Steelers to multiple Super Bowls.

Watching the Rooney family and then watching Randy Lerner, you see how the entire tone for the organization is set from the owner's chair. When the Steelers are having a down period, you know it's just an isolated setback and the team will be rolling again shortly. When the Browns have an upswing, you know it's a fluke.

I've never been one to set all the problems of the Browns at the feet of Randy Lerner, but if there is no progress in the next year or so, maybe it will be time for Lerner to see the handwriting on the wall and sell the team.
