Four Divisions
Ah, Sussman and his insane attention to detail. Suss breaks down what it would be like if baseball existed in a pre-1994 world, with today's teams.
Interestingly enough, the Indians' chances wouldn't change much. They'd actually be closer, much closer, to a division title. Also, Chicago wouldn't be running away with the title in the West.
Oh, for the days.

The same situation happened in 2000. Had the pre-1994 division format existed that year, the Indians would have won the old AL East and faced Chicago in the ALCS. The Yankees, who faded badly in September and won, I believe, only 85 games that year, would have been a distant second and not even sniffed the postseason. Instead, the Indians missed the playoffs by one game and the Yankees won their division and their third straight World Series title.

The remodeled 2000 team was perhaps the best of the Hart era. I loved David Segui as a player, and with him at first, Alomar, Vizquel and Fryman in the infield, the defense was the best it had ever been. If only they had won the Wild Card, perhaps then ...
Too tough to think about.
